Before knowing as the island of bali the foreigen sailors formerly called the island of Bali with various names such as Bally, Boly, or Ballie. The Spanish sailors while calling Java Bali as Minor. In the late 1500s, the island is not popular as it is today. The sailors, merchants, adventurers, or nation Potugis pirates who sailed to Malacca in 1509 reached the Moluccas in 1601, just across the coast of the island of Bali. The Portuguese called Bali Bally name, Boly, or Ballie. The main goal is shipping them Moluccas. Occasionally they stopped on the coast of Bali. But their arrival is not to visit, but only to find clean water and immediately went to look for the spice. Spaniards also several times across the island of Bali. They look tiny island called Java Minor, just off the top of his ship alone and does not visit this island. The oldest record of the Bali made a Dutchman named Lintgens. He was one of the crew who dinakhodai by Dutch sailors, Cornelis de Houtman. In his report, he had a lot flatter the natural beauty and cultural life of Bali. That time the world has not been attracted to Bali, since no merchandise in Bali, such as sandalwood or spices. The Dutch began to be interested in Bali in 1601, where the Dutch sent an official delegation to Bali under the leadership of Admiral Cornells van Heemskerck with letters and valuable gifts from the king of the Netherlands Prince Maurits. King who ruled in Bali when it welcomed the delegates, and there are the words of King: "Bali and the Netherlands are one". When going back to the Netherlands, in addition to be given souvenirs, Heemskerck was also presented with a Balinese woman who comely. Heemskerck gently rejects this special gift, but the king said, that less politely refusing a sincere. Greeting the king "Bali and the Netherlands is one" that contains high philosophy, tattwam ation, otherwise by the Dutch, that the Balinese are compromisers. What happens years later it turns out the Dutch are very difficult to conquer Bali. After Bali conquered the Dutch in the early 20th century, archaeologists, anthropologists and cultural heritage Netherlands found very unusual in Bali. They just understand that Bali is "small" it had something very "large" value which has been neglected Western nations. Once they learned the more fascinated, so they are strictly protect Bali. Even missionaries are called missionaries was inhibited. Tourist arrivals are also limited by the Dutch humanist especially Dr. H.N. van der Tuuk, J.F. Liefrinck and Dr. R.Goris. In 1928, they established a foundation shaped body with the name "Stichting van Liefrinck en Van der Tuuk" which was inaugurated by J. Caron, resident of Bali and Lombok. After that foreign researchers together with Indonesian scholars to conduct research on the history of Bali sourced from the Chronicle and other relics of ancient manuscripts kingdoms in Bali and Java. Them were Prof. Brandes, Berg, Kern, Krom, Pigeaud, Teeuw, Uhlenbeck, and Zoetmulder, and many others. On "the Dutch" it also appears chronicle chronicle-new, such as the chronicle of Mengwi, Babad Buleleng, Tabanan Chronicle and many more popping up after that.
